Sylas flinched from that gaze. One levelled at him by the sylo-roq with no accusation, even when he deserved it.

It wasn’t until a term after sacrificing himself for her, kneeling when Greyson came, had Sylas finally understood the truth. Offering his life hadn’t made him good, or better. Sacrifice fuelled by self-hatred, meant nothing.

He hadn’t recognised that until he’d seen true sacrifice. Until he’d seen someone willing to give everything for her. Someone who had the whole world to lose.

It was love that sliced through everything and Sylas hadn’t been able to tear his eyes away.

“How dare I compare myself to that? To what you did?” Sylas asked. “After I saw you kneel for her—truly kneel for her, I realised how little it meant when I did when I was capable of betraying her still.”

“Are you not being a little harsh on yourself?” Edward Bishop asked. “You gave what you were capable of giving.”

“I want to be worth more than that. You were her world, but everything that happened to her, to you, was in my name.”

And then Sylas knelt and said he’d give his life for hers, believing he was noble for it. Yet he never deserved, for one second, to compare his offer to the one this man made.

Sylas had offered death, when it was what he sought. This man had offered death with a whole world to live for.

Sylas was not brave, because when asked to make a true sacrifice, when asked to risk half of what remained in his world, he had thrown that coin into the night.
